Liver Transplants

The liver, one of the largest and most complex organs in the body has numerous functions that are necessary for life. A healthy liver is necessary for survival and can regenerate most of its own cells when they become damaged.Affecting those from all walks of life, an increasing number of people are learning that they have liver disease, yet most of them know very little about this potentially lethal illness.

At Ruby Hall Clinic, our doctors possess the passion and expertise to evaluate and treat patients with this complex disease, who are typically not considered for liver transplantation elsewhere because of factors, including age, body mass index or disease severity.

If you or your loved ones suffer from one of the following conditions, liver transplant might be the option for you. Liver failure can be caused by:

  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Long-term alcohol consumption
  • Cirrhosis
  • Acetaminophen overdose
  • Prescription medications and drugs
  • Poisons
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Liver cancer
  • Genetic diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases

While this program is relatively new atRuby Hall Clinic, having performed more than 51 liver transplants over a short time period is no mean feat. We perform whole organ transplants, as well as living donor transplants – sophisticated and life-saving options that distinguish our centre from others.

“At 50, I was looking at an entire life ahead of me when end-stage liver failure cast its dark shadow. The sole provider of my family, I not only stopped working, but even daily chores became cumbersome. With the liver transplant at Ruby Hall Clinic, life has become a celebration once again. Not a day passes when I don’t think about and thank the brave family that gave me life once again. The team here did everything possible to help me stay healthy, answering the smallest of my queries with happy smiles.”

FAQs

A number of misconceptions still exist in India regarding this particular procedure. Listed below are a few myths busted:

Myth: Only adults are susceptible to liver diseases

Fact: Globally, approximately 15,000 children are hospitalised every year with paediatric liver disease or disorders. The major causes of liver disease in children are genetics, viruses and blockages in the flow of bile from the liver. In addition, obese children are at high risk of developing a fatty liver.

Myth: Liver disease is caused only due to alcoholism

Fact: Alcohol is only one cause of over 100 forms of liver disease. Alcoholic hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that is frequently discovered in alcoholics, but also occurs in people who are not alcoholics. Because people vary greatly in the way their liver reacts to alcohol, it can be hard to predict who is susceptible to it.

Myth: Liver transplantation is a risky procedure

Fact: If done at the right time under an experienced practitioner, liver transplants are very safe procedures and we have a success rate of over 85 percent here at Ruby Hall Clinic. Patients who undergo this procedure do require life-long follow-up, but in most cases, this consists of getting blood tests once every three months and adjusting medicine doses.
